From the Athletics Director

Dear St. Francis Families,

First off, I’d like to give a big thank you to all who’ve supported Shark athletics all year long. We had an incredible year with each season having at least one sport put up a championship banner! Also, thank you all for supporting us in our move to the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL), where we saw across the board much more competitive equity for our athletic teams. Additionally, we were still able to keep our relationships with the SCCAL schools in one sport or another, allowing our athletes to play every SCCAL school this past athletic year.

Please check the athletics calendar for summer open gym dates/times and when the weight room will be open. The coaches are finalizing their summer schedules so we can keep our student/athletes training over the summer.

May 31st is fast approaching for our yearly Spring Swing Golf Tournament. Use the link below if you would like to sign up to play or sponsor the tournament and support Shark athletics.

Our softball team finished the season PCAL-Cypress Division Champions and were awarded a 7 seed in the CCS Division II bracket. The Sharks played at Monte Vista Christian in a de facto division title game and won 11-0. The Sharks hitting was in full gear and pitcher Alicia Mendez shut out the Mustangs. It’s the first league championship for softball in school history and the future is bright with a team loaded with young talent.

Our baseball team finished the season with league wins over Salinas and Gilroy and finished in the top 5 of CCS for baseball team GPA. Congratulations to our team on their hard work in the classroom as well. The team also deserves a lot of credit for competing in the PCAL Gabilan division, one of the best and toughest leagues throughout the state of California.

Our track & field teams enjoyed a great season. On the women’s side, seniors Natalie Henn and Janessa Yniguez led a team that competed very well throughout the PCAL season. On the men’s side we’re happy to tell you that Vince Wolfe won the PCAL Cypress Division 300 Meter Hurdles and Justin Parker added another league championship in track as he won the 100 and 200 meter races.

Our swim teams finished the year with very strong teams that competed very well in the tough PCAL Mission Division. On the men’s side, we had our first ever division champion in swimming as our 4x100 Free Relay team of Jesse Robinette, Jake Taylor, Lawson Orradre and Gio Garcia won the division race. The men’s Varsity team placed 5th in League out of 10 teams.
Gio Garcia finished 3rd in the 200 IM and 5th in 100 fly. Jake Taylor was 5th in 200 free. Frank Song 8th in 100 breast. Jesse Robinett 8th in 500 free. The women’s Varsity team placed 6th in League out of 10 teams. Samantha Held finished 4th in 50 free and 5th in 100 free. Ebony Held was 8th in the 200 IM and 8th in 100 breastroke. Santana Rigor was 9th in 500 free. Madeline Kehoe finished 9th in 100 Fly and Caeli Tani was 10th in 100 fly. Go Sharks!

Our golf team finished in 2nd place in the PCAL Cypress division with Izzy Mendez and Andrew Seymour finishing 1st Team All League and JoJo Diaz finishing 2nd Team All League. Congratulations to Coach Doherty on a great season and with only one senior graduating the future is bright.

Our men’s volleyball finished the season with league wins over Kirby and Soledad, a tournament win over Gilroy and non league wins over Stevenson. It was our first year having a Varsity men’s volleyball team, in addition to hosting our first ever men’s volleyball tournament with teams throughout the central coast.

Ana Gabriella Gutierrez was also awarded the 2019 CIF Female Scholar-Athlete of the year for the CIF Central Coast Section chosen by the CIF. Congratulations on your award!

Go Sharks,
Mr. Adam Hazel
