From our Athletic Director

Dear St. Francis Families,

We’re having a great winter sports season here at St. Francis on the court/field/mat and a great year in the classroom. Our student-athlete average GPA is a 3.3097 with spring sports still to go. I want to acknowledge the great work student-athletes are putting in to maintain this high level of success inside and outside of the classroom; let’s continue to be champions and scholars.

Our boys varsity basketball team is currently 17-3 on the season and 9-1 in SCCAL play. Our freshmen team won the Watsonville tournament while JV finished 2nd. For varsity, this year the CCS tournament quarterfinals will be held at Pinewood. We’ve hosted that round the last two years and were hoping to host again, but CCS wanted to let someone else host the event.

Our women’s varsity basketball team is currently 11-10 on the season and 5-5 in SCCAL. The JV won the King City tournament and are having a great year. Both of our men’s and women’s teams, at all levels, recently played at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz as part of the Pat Summitt Foundation to bring awareness for Alzheimer’s. It was a great event and both of our varsity teams beat Scotts Valley High School.

Our women’s soccer team is currently 9-6 on the season. We are off to our best start in school history and are undefeated in non-league play. We just beat Harbor for our first SCCAL win! Our JV team is doing well in their first season to go along with the varsity. In all, credit has to be given to the student-athletes, parents, and coaches to help us realize my vision for women’s soccer at St. Francis.

Our men’s soccer team beat Trinity Christian in non-league and now has a win over Stevenson as Stevenson used an ineligible player. Our record is now 2-10-1 as we had a tie vs York in non-league. Unfortunately we do not have enough healthy players to finish this season. Looking ahead to 2018-19 season we will be in the PCAL, where it will be a tiered league and every sport will have its own competitive equity tiers. As a school, we are 100% committed to having a thriving and competitive men’s soccer program.

Our second year Wrestling season is going very well as we currently are 3-1 in SCCAL dual meets. Driven by our amazing coaching staff, our student-athletes have an overall record of 95 wins and 44 losses in matches. We’ve had multiple wrestlers bring home medals from tournaments. In SCCAL dual meets our match record is 22-5 and on the season we’ve had 38 pins in less than 30 seconds. Last year we sent two wrestlers to CCS and our goal is to send more this year.

Spring sports practices have just started up and I look forward to giving you all good news once we begin games in the next few weeks. Through the drive and leadership of junior Lucas Bargetto and head coach Guy Putnins, we will be offering a JV men’s volleyball team. It has been a goal of Mr. Lee and mine since I started as Athletic Director and we are now in a position to make it a reality. This spring, our gym will be used for more than Battle for the Paddle practice and the spring musical - men’s volleyball has been launched!

Please note, we moved our Luau from fall to spring this year and it is set for April 21st. The dancers and band are booked, and we can’t wait for you to join us at this event. In February we will be mailing out a dual event flyer to promote both the luau and golf tournament so we can get more people to come to both events and we limit how much we ask people to support athletics at St. Francis.

Our golf tournament committee and I hope to see you at our June 1st, 2018 annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament at Spring Hills Golf Course. The flyer is up on the athletics section of the website and we can’t wait to have another great event.

Go Sharks!
Mr. Adam Hazel
Athletic Director
