Dear Parents,

The second quarter of the school year is well underway and going quickly.  Please help your students by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and have a planned lunch.  As the weather turns cold, we often find ourselves fighting colds and the flu. If we all work together to remind each other to wash hands and get rest hopefully we will all stay healthy!

The four St. Francis pillars of HOME, SCHOOL, CHURCH, and PLAYGROUND will facilitate the growth they need to be strong, well adjusted, spiritually reflective, life long learners!

You have chosen SF.  We are glad you are here.  Please trust us. We always strive to do what is right for the students and their overall success.  Please help us help you!

We want to help students (and parents) to feel safe and successful with each teacher.  There are many personalities in each family and in each classroom. Learning how to navigate appropriate, but uncomfortable or unpleasant conversations or situations is a part of growing up.

And finally, please the information below that was shared at this week’s parent meeting.

What educators know about high school students?

We know that:

  • Friendships readjust at least once
  • It is the age of exploration
  • It is a safe time for mistakes
  • Their mistakes do not define them
  • Learning how to learn is far more important than so much else
  • There are so many things more important than an individual grade or the particular college they attend
  • Practicing uncomfortable conversations is necessary

We also know that developmentally, students need:

  • To sleep
  • Healthy meals
  • To struggle
  • Clear boundaries
  • Unconditional love
  • To be forgiven
  • To forgive
  • To learning coping and problem solving skills
  • To know that we know there is so much more to them than their grade

How can a parent help a student?

Young adults need help:

  • Navigating the push and pull of priorities
  • Embracing their gifts and talents
  • Learning, then living life in perspective
  • Finding their limits and working with and past them
  • Prioritizing quality sleep
  • Planning for and making quality food choices

But, young adults also need help:

  • Looking ahead
  • Feeling uncomfortable with change
  • Finding their learning style(s)
  • Discovering their gifts and talents
  • Practicing difficult conversations
  • Seeing the positives
  • Experiencing struggles
  • Being ok with not being ok

Bell Schedule in the Coming Weeks

With this year’s bell schedule, every effort was made to evenly distribute class time particularly on weeks with large group (retreats, for example) absences.  This often moves the 1-7 day. For example, next Monday, November 12 is a C321 day with a late start for the students.

The SFHS website calendar has the accurate bell schedule for each day of November.  Please help your student remember to check it so they are prepared for the proper classes.

Tutorial

As I walk the campus between dismissal and 3pm, I notice quite a few students on campus, but the opportunity to get help from teachers is not being taken advantage of by many of them.  If your student says they went to Tutorial, please ask them which classroom, what they worked on with their teacher(s), and maybe even ask what assignments are coming up. Speaking to teachers and going to ask questions may create some discomfort, but it certainly prepares them for the also uncomfortable conversations with their future college professors, bosses, and in-laws.

Added Tutorial Option for Upper Division Math Classes

The Math Department has added a morning Tutorial for students in upper division math classes.  The morning Tutorial meets in Mr. Falcone’s room (H43) on Wednesday mornings beginning at 6:50am.  Any student in the follow classes may attend. Upper division classes are: Algebra 2, Honors Algebra 2, Precalculus, Honors Precalculus, Statistics, and AP Calculus.

Final Exams

First semester grades are will be entered on your student’s permanent St. Francis High School transcript. Paper report cards will generated following the December final exams will be mailed home.

The next 18 days of school are a vitally important time for students to focus on their studies.  Please continue to check student progress on RenWeb, encourage your students to attend Tutorial on a regular basis, and assist your student in planning ahead and time management.

With the holidays quickly approaching, there are only 15 class days remaining in the fall semester.  Final exams take place Friday, December 14 as well as Monday and Tuesday, December 17-18. Please look ahead to reschedule any appointments or events that may distract or limit your student’s success on final exams.

Following the survey sent to students and parents, the NHS hosted Student Study Day has been changed to Thursday, December 13.  The structure of the day will be communicated in the coming days, but attendance is required.

Kairos Absences

In order to have the Kairos attendees miss an even number of classes/class minutes, they will attend school on Monday and Tuesday and both of those days are long block days.  On Wednesday, the schedule is a 1-7 day with Thursday and Friday being long block days again. Therefore, students attending Kairos will miss one 45 minute class and one 83 minute class for each course they take.

Kairos attendees can and may have an assignment over Thanksgiving Break that they are expected to turn in on Monday or Tuesday, November 26-27.  Please speak with your student regarding the time commitment of those assignments and help them plan the time to get it completed.

All seniors are required to attend a retreat during their senior year.  Attending the Sophomore Retreat in order to replace the Kairos Retreat is not an option.  Students who do not attend the Kairos Retreat, are expected on campus for each school day Tuesday -Friday, November 27-30.

Also, over Thanksgiving, the seniors should be working on their college applications.  When they return from Kairos, they will be exhausted! And the widow to complete the UC or CSU application by the deadline (November 30) is entirely too short for a successful submission.

Finally, if your student is in a mixed class where she/he are one of only 4-6 students absent during the Kairos Retreat, the teacher will be expected to continue teaching content to the students who remain on campus.  Teachers will continue with the curriculum for the class, but will also set aside time and extra copies for the students when they return. Students who are absent for Kairos will be expected to learn the content, but in most cases will not be expected to complete every assignment that was given when they are away.

UC and CSU Applications

The window to submit UC and CSU applications for the enrollment in the fall of 2019, is open!  However, the deadline to submit the applications is Friday, November 30. If your student is a senior and has not yet begun their application, it should be completed ASAP.  They will not have internet access nor time to work on the application while they are away on the Kairos Retreat.

And finally, with the perspective of recent fires and shootings and as final exams and college application deadlines approach, please share this prayer with your students.

Peace Within

May today there be peace within.

May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.

May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you

May you be confident knowing you are a child of God.

Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.

It is there for each and every one of us.
