From the Athletics Director

Dear St. Francis Families,

First off, I’d like to give you all a big thank you for your support of Sharks athletics. We’ve been having a great winter season and you all are part of our success.
On Sunday, March 3rd at 5 pm, we will have our Winter Sports Banquet from 5-7 pm in the Borina Athletic Center. We look forward to seeing the families of all our winter sports student/athletes.

As Athletic Director, I continue to be part of various committees for the PCAL. Currently, I am the Cypress Division Rep for Football, the soon to be Cypress Division Rep for Wrestling, and am very excited to be the Cypress Division Rep for Softball, as we had a great ending to the 2017-2018 season with numerous returning starters.

Girls Basketball
This season has been a lot of fun for me personally as I took over the girl’s basketball varsity head coach position in December. On Tuesday, February 5th, we clinched a share of the PCAL Cypress Division Championship and are one win away from having the title all to ourselves. Our seniors Janessa Yniguez and Tanya Gallo have been tremendous leaders and this leadership is one of the main reasons why this team will get to hang a banner in the BAC. It will be the 5th banner in the last 7 years for girls’ basketball at St. Francis. Yniguez also has a chance to score her 1,000th career point. The 4-year letter winner is at 945 total career points with a league game remaining and playoffs still to come. Both Varsity basketball teams are likely to host a playoff game on either February 15, 16 or 19th. Then, the semi-finals will be on the 21st and finals on the 23rd, at locations TBD. Once we find out our seedings we will be putting the information on our website and our athletics calendar. CCS games charge everybody at the gate. St. Francis booster passes are not valid for these games.

Boys Basketball
The boys are currently 14-6 on the season and 4-4 in PCAL Mission play. We are the only team to beat Pacific Grove in PCAL Mission play and just lost a heartbreaker to them last Thursday. The boy’s team has already qualified for playoffs once again and we hope to make a strong push in the division V bracket. CCS playoffs this year had a format change in basketball.

Girls Soccer
Our girls are looking very strong under new coach Chris Croghan. Our varsity team has had a strong season in the PCAL Cypress division as we currently have a 5-5 league record and 6-5-1 overall record. The girls still have a chance at an at large CCS playoff spot.

Boys Soccer
The boys competed well in the Santa Lucia division as our current record sits at 6-8 in PCAL play and 6-9 overall; much improved from the previous season. We just honored our seniors in a win over Oakwood where senior Cesar Sanchez recorded a hat trick.

Wrestling
Our wrestling team just competed in the PCAL Cypress meet where they came away with 4 individual champions and finished 3rd as a team. The Sharks now have 7 wrestlers heading to the PCAL meet that will match Cypress wrestlers against Mission and Gabilan wrestlers to earn spots into the CCS tournament.

A major thank you to Javier and Laila Vazquez. The Vazquez family has taken on a new role we created to help athletics better connect with the SFPA. The Vazquez parents have been going to the SFPA meetings as our athletics representatives. This has been a major help for athletics. Thank you Vazquez family!

Looking ahead to spring sports:
Good news, our softball team will be hosting Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo on March 9th. We are working with them to play more sports against them in the future.

Some of our spring sports have begun practices, but we will not know the exact roster sizes until winter sports are finished. JV and freshman teams will finish February 12th, with varsity teams finishing that day as well except those who will go onto playoffs.

This spring our boy’s volleyball team will be in year 2 of the program, fielding a varsity team, and competing in the PCAL Mission Division. We’re also happy to announce that on March 23rd we will host our first ever boy’s volleyball tournament. We currently have 4 teams signed up and are hoping to get a few more.

Our swim team will also be competing in the PCAL Mission Division this year and will be hosting some dual meets for the first time since I’ve been the AD here. Our baseball team will be competing in the Gabilan Division as we hope to continue our success in baseball. Our softball team will be competing in the Cypress Division and we look to have a strong team. Our Track & Field team as well as our Golf team will be competing in the Cypress Division this spring. Our spring sports schedules have been put onto our athletic calendar and we hope you’re able to come out and support our Sharks!

Go Sharks,
Mr. Adam Hazel
